Release Day: The Bookshop on the Corner by Rebecca Raisin

The Bookshop on the Corner by Rebecca Raisin

Who said that only real heroes could be found in fiction?

Sarah Smith had an addiction – she was addicted to romance novels. The meet-cute, the passion, the drama and the gorgeous men! Now this wouldn’t have been such an issue if she hadn’t been the owner of the only bookshop in Ashford, Connecticut.

Ever since her close friend Lil, from The Gingerbread Café, had become engaged she had been yearning for a little love to turn up in her life. Except Sarah knew a good man was hard to find – especially in a tiny town like Ashford. That was until New York journalist, Ridge Warner stepped into her bookshop…

Love could be just around the corner for Sarah, but will she be able to truly believe that happy-ever-after can happen in real-life too!

Praise from Mia March, author of The Meryl Streep Movie Club, and Finding Colin Firth.

“How I wish this magical little bookshop was around the corner from my house! Brimming with heart, hope, and wisdom, THE BOOKSHOP ON THE CORNER is a wonderful novel about love, life, friendship, romance, books galore, and finding that happy ending.” –Mia March.

Chapter One

Snuggled in the cozy bay window of the bookshop, I looked up from my novel as the first golden rays of sunshine brightened the sky. Resting my head against the cool glass, I watched the light spill, as though it had leaked, like the yellows of a watercolor painting. Almost dawn, it would soon be time to switch on, and get organized for another day at The Bookshop on the Corner.

Every day I arrived at work a few hours prior to opening to read in the quiet, before customers would trickle in. I loved these magical mornings, time stolen from slumber, where I’d curl up with a book and get lost inside someone else’s world before dog-earing the page and getting lost in mine. Sure, I could have stayed in bed at home and read, but the bookshop had a dream-like quality about it before dawn that was hard to resist.

I turned back to the inside of the shop to watch shards of muted sunlight settle on piles of books, as if it were slowly waking them. The haphazard stacks seemed straighter, as if they’d decided when I wasn’t looking to neaten themselves up, dust their jackets off, and stand to attention. Maybe a customer would stumble across one of them today, run a hand lovingly across their covers, before selecting a book that caught their attention. Though my theory was books chose us, and not the other way around.

The bookshop was silent, bar a faint hum — were the books muttering to each other about what today would bring? Smiling to myself, I went back to my novel, promising myself just one more chapter.

When I looked up again the sun was high in the sky, and I’d read a much bigger chunk than I’d meant to. Some stories consumed you, they made time stop, your worries float into the ether, and when it came to my reading habits I chose romance over any other genre. The appeal of the happy ever after, the winsome heroine being adored for who she was, and the devastatingly handsome hero with more to him than met the eye tugged at my heart. And I’d read about them all: from dashing dukes, to cocksure cowboys, I never met one I didn’t fall for.

The sounds of the street coming alive filtered in, roller shutters retreating upwards, cheery shop owners whistling as they swept their front stoops. Lil, the owner of the Gingerbread Café across the road, arrived, hand in hand with her fiancé, Damon. They stood on the pavement in front of her café, and kissed goodbye, spending an age whispering and canoodling.

I tried to focus on my book, but couldn’t help darting a glance their way every now and then. Each morning they embraced almost as though they’d never see each other again, yet they worked only a few short steps away. It was as if they were magnetically drawn to each other; one step backwards would draw the other person forwards. I bet they couldn’t hear the sound of shops opening or cars tooting hello. They had their own kind of sweet music that swirled around them as if they were in some kind of love bubble.

Feeling as though I was intruding on a private moment, I swiveled away from the window and padded bare foot down to the back of the bookshop to make more coffee. My feet found the familiar groove in the wood; the path was so well trodden it was bowed. The feel of the polished oak underfoot with its labyrinth-type trails exposed around stacks of books was comforting. It’d weathered traffic for so long it was indelibly changed by it.

Taking the pot of coffee to the counter, I poured a cup, and sipped gingerly. Lately, I’d felt a little as though I was at a crossroads. You know that frustrating feeling of losing the page in your book? You didn’t want to go too far forward and spoil the surprise, and you didn’t want to go too far back, so you kind of stagnated and started from a page that didn’t seem quite right, but you read it a few times just to convince yourself…that was how I felt about my life. A little lost, I guess you could say.

Ashford was buzzing with good news recently, love affairs, weddings, babies, but I was still the same old Sarah, nose pressed in a book, living out fictional relationships as if they were my own. I was waiting for something to find me. But what if that something never came?

What did heroines do when they felt like that? Broaden their horizons? I imagined myself swapping Ashford for Paris, because of the bookshops and the rich literary history. But really, I’d never ventured far from my small town, and probably never would. My bookshop was a living, breathing thing to me, and there was no one to look after it even if I did want to do something spontaneous. Should I take up a hobby? I’d be the girl stuck line dancing with the octogenarian. Instead of dreaming of the impossible, I set about opening the shop, and shelved that line of thought for another time.

Interview with Blue Phoenix

My recent release, Summer Sky, is the first book in the contemporary rock romance series ‘Blue Phoenix’. This is an interview with two of the band members that I wrote for the 2014 Romance Blogfest hosted by My Crazy Corner and omitted to send  *sigh*. Check out all the posts about talented romance authors over at the blog:

Interview with Dylan Morgan and Jem Jones from the band Blue Phoenix

Dylan Morgan sits in the chair opposite, clearly not wanting to be here. Once over, interviewing Dylan would have led to a mix of nerves and excitement, his reputation back then suggested the possibility of more than an interview for anyone who caught his eye. This Dylan is guarded, and I’ve been instructed not to ask too much about the last few months. Guitarist Jem Jones is with us too, hidden behind dark sunglasses, glass of whiskey in his hand. The tension between the two is thick in the room. Wish me luck…

Me – Thanks for agreeing to the interview. How are things going with the new album? Should we expect more of the same from Blue Phoenix or is this a different direction?

Jem – We’ve had a delay (looks at Dylan) but we’re on track to release around August. Yeah, some more of the same but some new sounds too. We had some guest vocals from Danni-K and a new producer so I don’t think anyone will be disappointed.

Me – So kicking off another tour next month? It’s been over a year since you last toured. Excited?

Dylan – Big tours are tough. We spent three years solid touring and yeah, I don’t enjoy it as much as I did. But necessary evil I guess *laughs*

Jem – I see it as why we’re musicians – to perform and connect with as many fans as we can.

Dylan – Yeah, I get that Jem but we don’t all get the same things out of touring as you do.

Jem – Hope you can make it this time…Not planning any more vacations?

Me – I sense a bit of the famous Dylan and Jem tension around. Having issues around the musical direction of the album?

Jem – We just got issues *laughs* but what fun would we be without them?

Me – So, Dylan. A new look with the short hair. What made you go for an image change? A lot of your fans were shocked!

Dylan – I’ve had long hair since I was sixteen and didn’t recognise myself anymore. I figured a change might help.

Me – We all worried about you last month when you disappeared. Everything okay now?

Dylan – I needed time out.

Jem – According to Twitter you died about ten times in that week *laughs*

Me – And the world still wants to know about the girl who stole your heart while you were away.

Jem – *snorts*

Dylan – Didn’t you get told I’m not talking about my personal life? She’s nothing to do with the band or the music.

Me – We saw you talking about her on Twitter and we’ve seen the pictures. The world wants to know if she’s still in your life?

Dylan stands and walks to the window, back to me and I realise I’ve pushed things too far. But I had to ask, I’d be in trouble if I didn’t! The whole world wants to know who captured the unattainable Dylan Morgan and where she is now.

Me – My apologies, I think the fans just want to know if Dylan Morgan is still on the market. We already lost Liam to Honey.

Jem – I’m still around if you’re looking, sweetheart. For now. I don’t think this Sky chick wants anything to do with him. Why would she once she realises who the real Dylan Morgan is?

Dylan swears at Jem under his breath, glances at me then storms from the room bringing the interview to an abrupt end.

About the Author

Billie Jones writes over the top satire, with a pulpy feel. She spins average characters into outlandish situations, and subtracts the humdrum tedium of life replacing it with zany humor and action. She’s the alter ego of a writer who enjoys keeping her two personas separate, thus having another person to blame if the jokes fall flat. Her short stories and novellas have been published widely over the last five years, with six more novellas contracted to publishers in 2014, one of which will be under the pseudonym Billie Jones.

Guest Post : J’aimee Brooker – Rescued: A Festive Novella

Oh, how I’ve been longing for a northern hemisphere ‘white Christmas’… kids playing in the snow making snowmen, the sound of a crackling fire in the background, a freshly cut Christmas tree, and the aromas of cinnamon and a roasting turkey in the oven… the romance of a white Christmas for me is palpable.

For those of us in the southern hemisphere, Christmas is quite a different affair. For me, Christmas goes a little something like this… Kids are busy outside splashing and playing in the pool begging to be allowed to make the short walk to the beach, the air-conditioning is pumping, and the aroma of sunblock, Aeroguard (insect repellent) and a barbeque fill the air.

I love Christmas. I love the beach. And, I love that our Christmas celebrations are so vividly different to our northern hemisphere counterparts. But, it got me thinking… do those in the northern hemisphere long for a laid-back Aussie Christmas as well? Do they dream of sunbathing on the beach with mid-30-degree temperatures, throwing back a cold beer rather than a warm eggnog, stripping down to their swimmers rather than wrapping on a scarf…?

So what better way to celebrate the Australian Christmas spirit than to write about it!

Rescued: A Festive Novella
J’aimee Brooker

Two gorgeous girls
A knight in shining speedos
One red-hot Australian Christmas!

Set against the glorious backdrop of Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach comes the story of childhood friends Anya Thompson and Sophie Anders and their brush with one of Bondi’s finest—lifeguard Jack Covey.

As a lifeguard, Jack’s instincts are finely tuned. He’s spent his career watching for danger and avoiding distractions but when the gorgeous Anya Thompson catches his eye, he can’t help but be intrigued by Anya and her modest and reserved manner.

Anya’s lost more than her Christmas cheer, but will one steamy night with her best friend and the deliciously handsome Jack be just the thing to restart her shattered heart?

Whether you’re craving a good ol’ red-hot Aussie Christmas story or you want a story that’ll melt the snow and get you hot and bothered, Rescued is for you.

“He’s gorgeous” Sophie purred from behind her glasses, “don’t you think Anya?”

“Ah, yep, I guess so…”

“You guess so? Anya Thompson, you have to be kidding me—look at him, he is the ultimate specimen of man! Ooh, and look at the guy next to him… my gosh I’m glad we made this move! What I wouldn’t do to have them both at my beck and call…” she trailed off.

“Oh Soph, seriously, too much information” Anya sighed, rolling over to rest on her stomach giving her back a much needed slathering of the intensely warm sun rays but throwing a quick glance over her shoulder at the two lifeguards all the same. They were hot, but then again that was hardly a surprise, she hadn’t seen any that where less than Adonis-like since moving to Sydney.

“Right. Like you’ve never had a lifeguard fantasy Miss Goody-Two-Shoes?” she replied mockingly.  “Oh, gosh, Anya they’re looking over here” she whispered before stilling completely.

“Big deal, some hot lifeguards are checking out girls on the beach. Now tell me something that should surprise me, Soph?”

“Oh, that’s nice don’t ya think Jack—this one thinks we’re hot” came a strong male voice from above her sending her into a frenzied scramble to kneel and cover herself.

FIVE STAR reviews for Rescued: A Festive Novella

Very nice story by bookworm_722

This was a really nice story about how the character overcame a really sad incident in her life thanks to the care and compassion of her best friend and a new boyfriend. Often romance novels seem to skirt around how and why falling in love can happen so quickly but I didn’t feel that this was the case with this book — the author gave a lot of information and details that really helped to make the storyline believable. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

Like the cover says: a red-hot Aussie Christmas story! by _love_to_read_

I could hardly pass by this book with a hot man’s backside on the cover, so I downloaded my copy hoping it would live up to it’s description and, oh boy, it did! Bit easy on the Christmas side of things, so you could probably read this anytime of the year. Love the lifeguards, love the beach, love the book!

Whoa.. loved this fresh take on Christmas romance by BookMumOZ

Ok, so what’s not to love… Bondi beach, hot lifeguards, and the added bonus of a very hot threesome… Loved the characters especially the hero Jack!
