For the last few months I’ve been involved in a promotion with other new adult authors – I expect you’ve seen the posts on my blog. We’ve come together to organise a fantastic giveaway of a Kindle Fire HD, swag packs and more!
To go with the giveaway, we’re writing a post of our choice so I thought I’d write about my weird and wonderful 2013.
The beginning of 2013
When I began writing seriously, I hit a problem because my characters weren’t in high school but weren’t adults either. They faced different challenges. I couldn’t put my books into YA and they didn’t quite fit elsewhere. Then I heard about the NA category and suddenly my books had a place! The next problem was getting them published.
The Soul Ties Series
In May this year I signed a contract with Limitless Publishing for my Soul Ties series. This series is unusual in the New Adult category because it isn’t contemporary. But, there’s a few non-contemporary out there and I hope we’ll see more. Soul Ties is an urban fantasy with strong romance elements. Demons, angels, Nephilim and more co-existing in the world of college students. And a pink-haired heroine who literally kicks ass. There are currently two books available, Soul Ties and Torn Souls. There will be at least another two books in the series, including a stand alone prequel, Fated Souls, available in 2014 (release date tbc).

Because of Lucy or ‘What do you mean I can write contemporary romance too?’
I have always written paranormal and fantasy books. But I did have a half-written contemporary with new adult age characters. I showed part to my critique partner – she loved it and told me to go ahead. So I set myself the challenge: write a contemporary, in first person, dual POV. The result was Because of Lucy. As with Soul Ties, it doesn’t 100% fit the ‘expectations’ of new adult – Ness is another snarky heroine and Evan is not what readers expect either. But that’s what readers have told me they like. So much so, I have written a sequel when I originally planned it as a standalone. Finding Evan will be released early next year.

The Writing Community
This year I have met so many wonderful people and seen both sides of the writing community. I subscribe to the idea we’re all in this together and helping out other authors makes a lot more sense than treating this like a competition. After all, people who buy books, buy lots of books. They aren’t cars – if someone buys a different author’s book, it doesn’t mean they won’t buy yours! I love being involved in promotions with other authors and have made some great friends this year. I’ve also learned the value of my critique partner and beta readers. The social media and marketing has been a steep learning curve and I have a lot more to learn there!
Thank you to all my writing and blogging friends for your friendship and support!
Readers and Reviews
Reviews have been the biggest roller-coaster of the year and one I’ve learnt to put into perspective. Strangely enough, it’s a couple of the 5 star reviews that have made me cry, not the bad ones (even though they don’t exactly make me smile!). One of the highlights of writing is having a reader take the time to contact me directly and tell me they loved my book, or it affected them in some way. I love all my imaginary friends and it’s great when other people do too.
So a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has bought, read and reviewed my books this year.
I have learnt a lot this year, about what I did right and what I did wrong. There are other directions I intend to take my writing but that won’t just take a year. I love writing in different genres so I can’t see myself limiting to “just” contemporary or “just” paranormal. Someone told me I can call my brand “sizzle with a side of snark”. Some of my books sizzle more than others, but the snark is always there! I will continue to write strong heroines and original stories. 2014 will definitely see more of the Soul Ties series and the sequel to Because of Lucy. 2014 will probably see a new contemporary romance series. And maybe my NA with gothic and horror elements. That one is half-written and calling to me…
I hope everyone has a safe holiday season and that 2014 will be an awesome year for all!
